　　2012年6月15日欧洲杯的一场小组赛里，爱尔兰国家足球队遇上了实力远胜自己的西班牙队，连失4球惨败。比赛临近结束的时候，全场爱尔兰的球迷没有愤怒、没有哭泣，依然唱起了他们为自己的球队助威的歌曲：“The Fields of Athenry”。

　　在这样的一个时候，上万名球迷悲壮的歌声，感动了整个世界。无数远在世界各个地方的电视观众不禁为之动容，流下了泪水。中国解说员贺炜在比赛后微博写下了如下的话语。

　　这首歌的背景设置在1845年开始的爱尔兰大饥荒中，一名来自高威郡的Athenry镇， 叫做Michael的男子，由于为他饥饿的家人偷窃食物而被抓获。他遭到流放，被发配去了远在地球另一端的澳大利亚。

　　歌曲主要描绘了Michael的妻子Mary，在港口目送押解丈夫的船远去的情景。从此天各一方，再不能见面。
